Packing to go on holiday can be a daunting task for even the most seasoned travellers, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the region. Fluctuating weather conditions, accommodation types and area-specific activities make things even more tricky.
To make sure you don’t forget the essentials when visiting our cosy town, we’ve put together a handy Dullstroom packing list.
Warm Clothing
Dullstroom is one of the coldest places in South Africa so it’s always a good idea to pack plenty of warm clothing and layers. Think wind-breakers, scarves, beanies and thermals, especially if you’re keen to explore the outdoors. When indoors at Walkersons Hotel & Spa you’ll never be too far from a roaring fireplace or a glass of something delicious to warm you up (red wine, tea, whiskey – it’s up to you!). Our suites also feature electric blankets, open fireplaces and fluffy blankets, which help to keep the chill at bay.

Walking Shoes
This part of the country is a hiker’s paradise, with awe-inspiring scenery, misty mountains, meandering rivers and picturesque waterfalls. The walking trails on Walkersons Estate are one of our biggest attractions, with a 3000m network of paved pathways criss-crossing the 800 hectare estate. Whether you’re keen for a slow riverside stroll or a more challenging hike up into the mountain reserve, make sure to pack a decent pair of walking shoes.

Camera
The absolute essential to any trip to the Dullstroom countryside – something to help capture the magic! And don’t forget your charger (or an extra battery pack) in case you get shutter-happy and run out of power.
Your Fishing Favourites
Dullstroom is proudly known as the fly-fishing capital of South Africa, with countless dams stocked with rainbow and brown trout. In fact Walkersons Estate has a number of well-stocked dams and is an idyllic base from which to fish your way through the region. While all necessary fly-fishing equipment can be hired from the hotel reception (guests only) if you happen to have a favourite rod or a carefully-crafted tackle box, feel free to bring that along.

Sun Protection
Holidaying with a sunburn is never fun! To make sure you’re well protected, pack a wide-brim hat, a bottle or two of suncream and a pair of sunnies.

Smart Casual Attire
Our charming town is home to some of the finest restaurants in Mpumalanga, including our very own Flying Scotsman restaurant which hosts indulgent 4-course dinners each evening. If fine dining is your forte then we suggest popping a few items of slightly-formal wear into your suitcase before heading out.
Your Appetite
While we’re on the topic of dining, make sure you bring your appetite along on a trip to Dullstroom. The menu at the Flying Scotsman changes daily and according to the seasons, however, diners can look forward to our signature dishes such as roast duck with a black cherry sauce and freshly-caught rainbow trout. Other notable eateries in and around ‘Dullies’ include Mrs. Simpson’s, Harrie’s Pancakes, The Rose Cottage & Co and Charlie C’s.
