The charming town of Dullstroom is known as the fly-fishing capital of South Africa – and for good reason. With a generous number of fully-stocked dams to choose from, and numerous accommodation options to boot, it is an angler’s paradise. Here, we present everything you need to know about booking a Dullstroom fly-fishing getaway.
Dullstroom Fly-Fishing Spots
It goes without saying that Dullstroom boasts a wide range of well-stocked dams and streams. Firstly, there are two town dams in the Dullstroom Nature Reserve, which are open to all members of the public. Both are only accessible through the Caravan Park main gate and the Oaklane private gate. To fish on these dams, anglers must be in possession of a valid Mpumalanga Angling License (available from Village Angler) and a valid permit (available from the Caravan Park main gate). The Lower Dam is a catch-and-release only water, while the Upper Dam is subject to a catch limit. Please note, the town dams only allow fly-fishing – no bait fishing or spinning is allowed.
As well as the two public dams, Dullstroom also features a number of private dams. One of the most well-known names in the South African fly-fishing industry, Mavungana Flyfishing manage a picturesque, yet challenging, spring-fed 3 hectare lake at the Bird of Prey Centre. If you’re staying at Walkersons Hotel & Spa, you don’t have to travel far to find a spot to hone your angling abilities, as the estate itself features 14 different dams filled with rainbow trout. Dunkeld Country & Equestrian Estate also offers no fewer than 19 still water dams, generously stocked from their on-site hatchery. Last, but not least, Elandskloof Trout Farm features 11 dams varying in size, which are accessible to both guests and day visitors. Much like Dunkeld, the waters at Elandskloof are stocked from their private hatchery.
Walkersons Hotel & Spa is one of the most popular accommodation options in Dullstroom, and as we mentioned, it is a haven for fly-fishers Mecca, with various dams and small lakes scattered across the estate. In terms of catered accommodation, Walkersons offers guests a choice of 27 suites, including the ever-so elegant honeymoon suite. The rates for each of these include breakfast on the terrace and dinner at the Flying Scotsman Restaurant. In terms of self-catering accommodation, there are 6 beautiful cottages to choose from, each with their own character and individual attributes. Take a look at the different cottages, here!
