Head to the Malalane Market on 5 September for a relaxed afternoon on the edge of the Kruger National Park, about 180 km from Dullstroom.
The Malalane Market is one of the more family-friendly options, should you decide to take a break from fly-fishing and all the other pleasurable things to do in Dullstroom. The market supports local suppliers and businesses and gives visitors a taste of genuine Lowveld laid-back hospitality.
This quarterly event takes place on the R570 Malalane Gate Road just outside Hamiltons Restaurant. Known to the locals as Karino or Riverside Farms, the venue is situated on the Southern border of the Kruger Park and has managed to combine fruit production with wildlife conservation. The farm operates as an eco- and wildlife friendly venture, with a 2 500 ha game farm located in the middle of the canefields and orchards grown here.
At the Malalane Market you can browse among the many stalls selling handmade arts and crafts, clothing, pickles and preserves while a local band provides a jovial musical background to the scene. Be sure to scoop up a couple of jars of delicious Maroela preserves – chutneys and relishes that are unique to this area and quite simply delicious.
You can even settle down for a picnic lunch in the gardens with Prego, sweet mustard potato salad and red velvet cupcakes for R100 per person. A kiddie’s version is also available for R65.
Pre-booking is essential for the picnic and details are available on the market’s Facebook page.
When last did you enjoy a down-to-earth country fair.
