Held in Nelspruit annually, Innibos Kunstefees is Mpumalanga’s answer to the National Arts Festival. Although it started as a mere festival of the arts, this event has blossomed into one that encompasses a broad spectrum of cultural aspects, including food, fun, and fabulous activities, and has become a worthwhile daytrip from Dullstroom, as it is found only an hour and a half’s drive from the town.Innibos, which means ‘in the bush’ in Afrikaans, will be taking place from 1 to 4 July 2015, with a similar format to ‘Oppikoppi’ (on the mountain), held in the Magaliesberg every year.
The Bergvlam High School is transformed into the hub of festivities during this time and is centre stage for hundreds of musical acts, from classic to country and pop to heavy metal, as well as a healthy dose of Afrikaans offerings across all genres.
Innibos is one of the most popular Mpumalanga events, and young guns from all over the province flock here every year. It has almost become a rite of passage for the youthful to hang out with their peers, overdo it in the beer tents, and rough-it in the campsites and dormitories located around town.Innibos does not only cater to the music lover and party seeker though, venues throughout the city will come alive with theatrical and comedy acts too. There will be poetry and literary readings by esteemed authors, actors and playwrights as well as workshops and discussions hosted by those in the literary limelight.
The daytime events such as a fun fair, food markets selling traditional ‘boerekos’ (farm food) and craft markets with all sorts of locally produced knick-knacks on offer are a treat. Innibos attracts over 100 000 visitors annually, and is one of the most family friendly festivals in Mpumalanga. In reality, this event is reminiscent of a super-sized, super well-organised school fête, minus the tombola stall. The supervised children’s activities are excellent, with a dedicated area for the little ones where they can enjoy stories, conservation-based educational talks and fun for all ages.
The festival organisers are announcing new artists and features on their Facebook page as things develop and you can book tickets via Computicket.
