Guests staying at any of the luxurious Dullstroom accommodation options on 25 January, 2015 can look forward to a fragrant outing in the form of the annual Wildflower Day to be held at Chrissiesmeer.Known as the South African version of England’s Lake District, Chrissiesmeer is located just an hour and a half from Dullstroom, in Mpumalanga Province, and provides a worthwhile outing for visitors to the province all year round. The Wildflower Day is a must for garden enthusiasts and nature lovers, who can spend the day discovering interesting specimens of indigenous plants and learning more about their role in the ecology.
The event starts at 8am with an informative presentation by local park official and wild orchid expert, Frans Krige, who will fill you in on mosses, mushrooms and little ‘flying-fairies’.Afterwards, the group will proceed out into the field to prime wildflower sites in the surroundings, accompanied by local flower aficionados and flora fundi’s. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat and bring a notebook, pencil, binoculars and magnifying glass along. Extra water is recommended and you can take along some ‘padkos’ for your walk in the form of snacks if you would like to.
The entry fee includes a picnic lunch consisting of delicious country-style treats to be enjoyed after your walk, and pristine spots amongst the flowers have been singled out as picnic areas for your enjoyment. Bring your own chair, umbrella, crockery and cutlery, along with liquid refreshments for the afternoon.
