Dullstroom may be famous for its trout fishing, cosy fireside escapes, and misty mountain landscapes, but this charming Mpumalanga town holds plenty of surprises.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular guest, there’s always more to discover in South Africa’s very own “highland escape.”

Here are some fascinating things you probably didn’t know about Dullstroom.

1. A Town Which is ‘Wild About Whisky’

Whisky lovers, take note!

Dullstroom is home to Wild About Whisky, a bar boasting the largest collection of whiskies in the Southern Hemisphere. With over 1,000 different bottles from all corners of the world, it’s the perfect spot for a tasting journey – whether you’re curious about single malts, rare finds, or bold blends.
Even if whisky isn’t your drink of choice, the atmosphere alone makes this an unmissable stop.

2. Home to the Highest Railway Station in South Africa

At 2,077 metres above sea level, Dullstroom is home to the highest railway station in the country – a charming reminder of the town’s historic past.

While passenger trains no longer stop here, the station’s lofty altitude is still a point of pride. The elevation gives Dullstroom its cool, crisp mountain air and distinct seasonal climate, with misty mornings, fresh summers, and cosy winters by the fire.

Today, the station is also a notable marker on the Rovos Rail route, adding a touch of grandeur and nostalgia as the luxury train journeys through Mpumalanga’s highlands.

3. A Hub for Athletes

Dullstroom has quietly built a reputation as a training ground for professional athletes, particularly long-distance runners and cyclists.

European teams often travel here in the summer months to take advantage of the thin air, which helps improve endurance. You might just spot an international competitor out on the trails while you’re enjoying a casual stroll through the countryside.

4. A Town Reborn & Renamed

Dullstroom has a history as colourful as its landscapes. Founded in 1883 by Dutch settlers, the town was almost completely destroyed during the Second Boer War, with only two buildings left standing. Many residents returned to the Netherlands, but a determined few later came back and rebuilt, with Dullstroom officially re-established as a town council in 1921.

Its name also has an interesting backstory – originally called “Dull’s-stroom”, after founder Wolterus Dull and the Crocodile River (“stroom”) that flows nearby, it was eventually shortened to the simpler “Dullstroom” we know today.

Dullstroom officially adopted the dual name of Dullstroom-Emnothweni in February 2024, after the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC) approved the addition. Emnothweni is a name that means “place of prosperity”. However, the town is still very commonly referred to as Dullstroom, with shuttle services and informational sites often mentioning both names.

5. A Twitcher’s Paradise

Dullstroom is a dream destination for birding enthusiasts. It is the only place in South Africa where all three of the country’s endangered crane species can be found together – the Blue Crane (also our national bird), the Wattled Crane with its distinctive long wattles, and the regal Crowned Crane with its striking golden crest. Spotting just one of these birds is special, but the chance to encounter all three in one region makes Dullstroom truly unique.

Beyond cranes, the high-altitude grasslands, wetlands, and forests surrounding the town create habitats for more than 250 bird species. From colourful sunbirds flitting between wildflowers to the elusive secretary bird striding across open fields, Dullstroom’s birdlife offers year-round fascination.
