Whether you’re looking for action-packed adventures or relaxed family bonding time, there’s no shortage of things to do in Dullstroom. From an Ernie Els-designed golf course to shopping, wine tasting and fly-fishing, here are some of our favourite activities to enjoy.

Golf

Tackle the 18-hole Highland Gate Golf Course nestled in the Steenkampsberg mountain range near Dullstroom at Highland Gate Golf Estate. Rated by many as one of the best in South Africa, the course’s testing layout provides a challenge to both club players and tour professionals. Against the backdrop of some of the most majestic mountain views in Mpumalanga, its high altitude offers scenic charm and a truly memorable golf experience.

The championship-level 18-hole golf course was designed by Ernie Els, and offers spectacular views of the mountains. The estate also has a driving range and practice area, two restaurants and a ProShop stocked with all the latest equipment. Keen golfers will be spoilt for choice at Highland Gate, where they can enjoy world class golfing while soaking up breath-taking scenery.

Fly Fishing

Known as South Africa’s fly-fishing capital, Dullstroom is a dream destination for anglers of all skill levels. Its cool climate, crystal-clear dams, and scenic mountain surroundings make it ideal for this tranquil yet rewarding outdoor pursuit. Whether you’re a seasoned fly-fisher or just starting out, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to cast your line.

In town, two well-stocked fly fishing stores—The Village Angler and Mavungana Flyfishing—offer expert advice, top-quality gear, and even guided fishing experiences for those looking to learn or explore new waters.

For guests staying at Walkersons Hotel & Spa, exclusive access to 14 well-stocked dams and lakes on the estate means you can enjoy world-class trout fishing right on your doorstep. Fly fishing at Walkersons is available only to overnight guests, with rods and gear available to hire. Please note, all fishing is strictly catch and release.

Cultural Shopping

Dullstroom isn’t just about outdoor adventure—it’s also a haven for treasure hunters, history buffs, and lovers of all things quirky. Take a wander through town and discover a delightful selection of shops that offer a window into the area’s unique character and charm.

Start with The Clock Shop, home to the largest selection of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere. From ornate grandfather clocks to handcrafted cuckoo clocks, some dating as far back as 1750, the collection is both impressive and enchanting. Many of the timepieces are available for purchase, while others are lovingly restored on-site.

Just down the road, Trams Antiques offers a mix of vintage finds, collectibles, and handmade treats—including their locally famous homemade fudge. It’s a wonderful spot to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir or simply browse for hidden gems.

For something slower-paced, stop in at the Dullstroom charity bookshop, where second-hand books line the shelves and proceeds support a good cause. It’s the kind of place where you’ll lose track of time while leafing through classic novels and rare finds.

Bird of Prey Centre

A must-visit for animal lovers of all ages, the Dullstroom Bird of Prey & Rehabilitation Centre offers a memorable and educational family outing just down the road from Walkersons. Open daily from 09h00 to 16h00 (closed on Tuesdays unless it’s a public holiday), the centre is best known for its twice-daily Flight Displays at 10h30 and 14h30, where visitors can witness South Africa’s majestic raptors in action—an awe-inspiring experience that blends conservation with pure spectacle.

Beyond the displays, families can explore beautifully maintained enclosures with informative signage, a kids’ playground, a small farmyard, and a cosy coffee shop. It’s the perfect way to spend a few hours soaking up the fresh air and learning about the incredible work being done to rehabilitate injured birds of prey in the area.

Art Galleries

Dullstroom’s creative spirit is wonderfully showcased through its vibrant selection of art galleries. One of the most renowned is the Dimitrov Art Gallery, home to the expressive and emotive works of Vladimir Dimitrov. His bold brushstrokes and evocative portraits make this a must-visit for art lovers.

Just around the corner, Asteria Fine Arts Gallery offers an elegant and eclectic collection of South African artworks in a beautifully curated space that encourages browsing and discovery. And for those with an eye for detail, Silk Curated is a treasure trove of contemporary fine art, where each piece is thoughtfully selected to celebrate both emerging and established local talent.

Dullstroom Gin Tasting & Spirits Experiences

For parents seeking a more refined activity while the kids are entertained, Dullstroom offers some excellent gin and spirit tasting options. At Wild About Whisky, you’ll find the Southern Hemisphere’s largest whisky bar, but their gin tastings are equally impressive—featuring a curated selection of local and international gins paired with expertly chosen tonics. The knowledgeable team is on hand to guide you through the flavour profiles, making it a fun and educational experience for spirit lovers.

Just down the road, the Dullstroom Cultour Co Wine Club provides a charming setting for those who appreciate the finer things in life. In addition to their range of boutique wines and gourmet pantry items, they also offer gin and wine tastings, showcasing small-batch South African producers. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just curious, these stops offer a taste of Dullstroom’s cultured side.
